History

From timber to triumph

In 2014, the year of Thomsons ITM 25th anniversary, the team had more to celebrate than ever before: three successful stores servicing the Waikato & South Auckland, a modern and
purpose-built frame and truss manufacturing plant and a team of over 65 staff. You can be confident that building and serious DIY is our specialty.
It all began in the early 1980s, with a bare block in Whatawhata, a portable sawmill, 100m 3 of untreated pine and Greg and Trish Thomson’s will to succeed. Twenty five years on, it is now the largest independent building supplies merchant in the Waikato.
Thomsons Timber officially opened it's doors in Whatawhata in September 1989 after we were granted resource consent to mill and sell timber. We quickly expanded to meet the demands of the Waikato’s growing building industry and in 1991 bought the truss plant. Thomsons Timber purchased Croft’s timber in 1996 and opened the first Hamilton branch on Norton Road.
In 2008, we moved into our current premises, a flagship store for ITM with a purpose-built yard and building. In 2005 Thomsons Timber joined ITM - a co-operative group of independents. With the buying power of ITM, we could pass on the very best brands to our customers at the most competitive prices, strengthening our place as a market leader of building supplies in the Waikato. That year also saw Mike van der Hoek take the helm as general manager, now director and shareholder.
The company is always expanding and adopting new business methods and innovative approaches to meet the ever-changing dynamics of the building industry. This has helped us to thrive despite consecutive recessions, stay on top of our game to help customers  manage their own businesses through these challenging times.
